The first thing small businesses owners need to understand is why customers are seeking out their services. The startup book Nail It Then Scale It explains marketing in a way that makes sense to the average entrepreneur working on a startup but it also translates to every day marketing decisions. I use it every day to make tactical marketing decisions when working on new projects.
As a decision making tool Nail It Then Scale It will help you gain insight and understand why consumers search for to you when they have a problem. They may not know about you yet, but they will search for information on products or services to solve their problem. Their search will take on several different forms. First they will do an internal “rack their brain” search to try to remember where they saw a specific product or service. Then they will do an external search on the web looking for the vendor with the best deal closest to where they live. The larger the purchase amount the more comparison shopping involved so they will validate their decision with their friends and family relying on their reviews and experience as they complete the search process.
Being top of mind during the decision making process, on the web, in social media spaces will increase your chances of being selected to solve that problem. Understanding what their problem is will guarantee you are providing the right service.

There were two products that have emerged with scalable SEO keyword management solutions namely Conductor and Bright Edge. Both are quick and informative automated SEO tools. I was looking for a solution that had a solid integration into Adobe SiteCatalyst data and was easy for digital marketers to use. In March of 2011 Conductor’s Searchlight developers were finishing up the Adobe Genesis integration into SearchCenter. Being able to use one data set meant I would have one source of truth and the ability to report on SEO stats within SearchCenter for the first time. If I chose Conductor my client would be able to import the SEO data to make recommendations for new SEM keywords and be able to report on ROI for SEO keywords. Bright Edge had a lot of good features, was easier to use and also had a SiteCatalyst FTP integration. The client wanted the Conductor and SearchCenter integration because they wanted one source of truth, but Bright Edge was easier to use.
